Our Advisory Board

All of the articles and activities on our website have been created with the support and input of our incredible team of experts and researchers: the Dove Self-Esteem Project advisory board. On this page, you can meet the team and find out more about them.

We’re working with experts in girls’ self-esteem and body confidence to develop a program of activities that will help girls and young women around the world reach their full potential and have happy and fulfilling futures. Let us introduce you to our advisory board.

Dr. Susie Orbach

SusieOrbach Dr. Susie Orbach is the Chair of the Dove Self-Esteem Project advisory board and oversees the Board’s council on education and content creation. She is a practicing psychotherapist, writer and co-founder of The Women’s Therapy Centre, London and The Women’s Therapy Centre Institute, New York.

Dr. Orbach has previously worked with Dove as co-originator of the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty and its related research into women and their relationship with beauty.

Her books include Fat is a Feminist Issue, Hunger Strike, On Eating, What's Really Going on Here, Towards Emotional Literacy, The Impossibility of Sex and the recently published Bodies. She is chair of the Relational School in the UK and has a clinical practice seeing individuals and couples. Dr. Orbach is UK convenor of Endangeredbodies.org and a member of the expert panel on Body Confidence for the Home Office. Last year she spoke at the UN on women and their bodies.

Dr. Phillippa Diedrichs

PhillippaDiedrichs Dr. Phillippa Diedrichs oversees the advisory board’s council on measurement and impact. She is a research psychologist specializing in body image and eating disorder prevention. She completed her PhD in Health Psychology at The University of Queensland (Australia) and is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR) at the University of the West of England in Bristol, UK.

Dr. Diedrichs’ research primarily focuses on exploring social and cultural influences on body image, and the development of evidence-based body image and eating disorder prevention programs. Her research has garnered international media attention and awards, and has been published in esteemed, academic peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Diedrichs is an editorial board member for the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine and co-chair of the Body Image and Prevention Special Interest Group for the Academy for Eating Disorders.

Lisa Lister

LisaLister Lisa Lister is the founder of Sassyology.com , with more than 12 years experience in the UK PR and publishing industry. Sassyology is an online publication which focuses on, among other things, the empowerment of women and female body issues. She also offers advice to girls through columns in teen magazines, addressing real issues, questions and experiences.

Ms. Lister is a frequent contributor to both online and offline publications and has written a number of books predominantly aimed at young girls on female beauty and confidence, including SASSY: The Go-for-it Girl’s Guide to Becoming Mistress of Your Destiny, Think Pink and Beauty*licious.

Dr. Nancy Etcoff

Dr. Nancy Etcoff is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Harvard Medical School, a faculty fellow in Harvard University’s Mind/Brain/Behavior Interfaculty Initiative, and a research psychologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Psychiatry in the US, where she directs the Program in Aesthetics and Well Being. Dr. Etcoff has conducted research on the perception of beauty, emotion and the brain for more than 20 years.

She has previously worked with Dove consulting on the creation of its Campaign for Real Beauty as well as advising on the Dove Self-Esteem Project since its inception in 2004.

Dr. Etcoff is the author of Survival of the Prettiest: The Science of Beauty, which was the subject of a one-hour Discovery Channel program, and has contributed her expertise to news stories and broadcast documentaries around the world.

Dr. Tara Cousineau

TaraCousineauDr. Tara Cousineau is a clinical psychologist, self-esteem coach and eHealth entrepreneur based in Boston. She founded BodiMojo.com, an evidence-based and innovative solution to help teenagers take control of their health by leveraging the “digital” playgrounds they reside in. The Web program improved body esteem in teenage girls.

Her expertise includes writing, research and conceptual development for technology-based products, health publications and health services. This includes helping businesses and organizations to identify and formulate health communication strategies to reach girls and women as individuals, groups and decision makers.

Jess Weiner

JessWeiner Jess Weiner is the founder and CEO of Talk to Jess, LLC, a creative development and consulting firm specializing in influencing the social messaging sent to women and girls by working with corporations, engaging experts and thought-leaders, and through creating dynamic content that challenges and expands current social stereotypes.

Considered this generation’s “go to authority” on women, girls and confidence, Weiner leverages more than 18 years of experience in the field as a best-selling author, speaker and educator.

Her deep relationships in this space enable her to create powerful brand messaging while rooting it in real world experience with practical takeaways for consumers and audiences.

Jennifer Siebel Newsom

JenniferSiebel Jennifer Siebel Newsom is a filmmaker, speaker, actress and advocate for women, girls and their families. She wrote, directed and produced the 2011 award-winning documentary Miss Representation and subsequently launched MissRepresentation.org, a call-to-action organization that provides women and girls the tools to realize their full potential. She is currently CEO of the organization.

Newsom also executive-produced the Academy Award-nominated documentary The Invisible War and is in production on her next film series The Mask You Live In. She was a member of the Girl Scouts of the USA Healthy MEdia Commission for Positive Images of Women and Girls and graduated with honors from both Stanford University and Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. Newsom resides in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband, California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, and their three children.

Sharon Haywood

SharonHaywood Now based in Argentina, Sharon Haywood is a Canadian freelance writer and editor who is a regular contributor to global discussions around female image and self-esteem. Since 2009, she has been co-editor for AdiosBarbie.com, a website that promotes healthy body image for folks of all sizes, ages, races, cultures, abilities and sexual identities. She is also a virtual member of the London-based AnyBody team, part of the international movement, Endangered Bodies.

Haywood’s work with AnyBody inspired her to organize Endangered Species: Preserving the Female Body in Buenos Aires, one of five international summits held in March 2011. Subsequently, she founded AnyBody Argentina, the Buenos Aires chapter of Endangered Bodies, which fights against sizeism and promotes healthy body image for Argentine girls and women.

Dr. Christina Berton

ChristinaBerton Dr. Christina Berton is a self-esteem expert and founded the Amara Pro Self-Esteem Foundation in Mexico. Her work with the Foundation has reached the lives of more than 400,000 women and girls since its inception in 2008.

Dr. Berton takes a fresh approach to addressing women’s issues by helping people in their process of self-discovery, empowerment and overall strengthening of self-esteem. The Amara Pro Self-Esteem Foundation has partnered with Dove in previous years to reach mothers and daughters with self-esteem programming in Mexico.

Dr. Joana Novaes

Dr. Joana Novaes is an academic researcher, writer and coordinator at the Center for Beauty Disorders, Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Research and Social Intervention in Brazil.

Dr. Novaes is the author of a number of books relating to women’s body image, including The Unbearable Burden of Ugliness: On women and their bodies, as well as Which Body Shall I Wear? Sociability and use of the body by women in the higher and lower classes.

She has a doctorate in Clinical Psychology and postdoctoral degrees in Medical Psychology and Social Psychology. She is also a professor of the Master’s Program in Psychoanalysis, Health and Society at Universidade Veiga de Almeida.

Martin Staniforth

MartinStaniforth Martin Staniforth is the Dove Self-Esteem Project advisory board Secretary and the founder of Laughing Phoenix, a UK-based consultancy that focuses on corporate social responsibility and cause marketing. Staniforth has been a long-time consultant on global Dove self-esteem programes, helping with the creation of a range of Dove Self-Esteem Project assets and activities since 2003.

He has worked with Dove to facilitate partnerships with educational organizations and to develop self-esteem tool kits for public use. He has also helped Dove shape its commitments to changing girls’ lives in a way that makes a positive impact on the world.
